Zhanna Vaynberg

Program: M. A. in Writing and Publishing

Accomplishments, Awards, Publications, and Scholarships: An honorable mention in Glimmer Train‘s August 2011 Short Story Award for New Writers for “Things You Should Never Tell Your Mother,” two poems (“Bad Timing” and “At Sea”) published in the winter 2012 issues of Burning Word & After Hours magazines, a short story called “Do Not Leave Chicago” published in the winter 2012 issue of Euphony Journal, and a one-act play called “What it’s Never About” published in the 2012 issue of Threshold (+ a genre award).

Favorite Courses at DePaul: Hannah Pittard’s “First Person Narratives” and Michele Morano’s summer “Multi-Genre Shorts” class, both of which had an enormous impact on the kinds of stories I now write.

Post-graduation Plans: Since December 2011, I’ve been working as a freelance editor and as the head of digital media at Academy Chicago Publishers, so I’ll continue doing both of those things, which I thoroughly enjoy. Also, I’ll try my hand at writing a book one of these days. I’ve been saying it for years but this time I really mean it!
