Essay Fiesta, Turcotte Reading, and a PhD Program

Did you know that this Thursday, Oct. 20 is the National Day on Writing? The National Day on Writing, sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English, honors the significance of writing in our lives and draws attention to the remarkable variety of writing that we engage in. NDW emphasizes the lifelong process of learning to write and encourages Americans to write, enjoy, and learn from the writing of others.

In honor of National Day on Writing, the University Center for Writing-based Learning Writers Guild is teaming up with Essay Fiesta to present a reading of creative works, and all are invited to attend what promises to be an exciting evening! The event will take place this Thursday, Oct. 20th, from 4-5:30pm in room 120A of the LPC Student Center.

Essay Fiesta’s mission is to bring together a cross-section of Chicago’s art and writing communities for evenings of first-person, non-fiction essays and charity. In this special event, students from the Writers Guild will be collaborating with Essay Fiesta to share creative pieces that they have been discussing and critiquing throughout the quarter. There will also be opportunities to learn more about and get involved with UCWbL Writing Groups and Writers Guild.

For more information, contact the Writing Groups team at WritingGroups@depaul.edu, and check out the event on Facebook!

MAWP professor Mark Turcotte will be speaking and reading at “Poets and Editors,” part of the University of Michigan’s Zell Visiting Writers Series. Turcotte, along with poets Vievee Francis and Mary Leader and their editors, Reginald Gibbons, Parneshia Jones, and Tony Frazer, respectively, will read from recent books and discuss the collaborative process of bringing a book of poetry into print. The day-long event will include a roundtable discussion, a panel, and a reading.

This event will take place on Thursday, Oct. 27, at the University of Michigan campus, so if you’d like to make the trek to what is sure to be a great event, you have time to plan. For those of us who can’t make it, we extend our congratulations to Prof. Turcotte for being featured. Click on the poster for details.
