MALS/IDS Communications Assistant (Student Assistant II), updated Feb. 2018

General Summary: 

Student Assistant II is responsible for assisting with projects, basic office duties (i.e. typing, filing, photocopying, answering phones, etc.), providing customer service, and assisting department staff. Major projects include assisting with production and publication of annual newsletter and program marketing pieces. Some attendance at occasional recruiting and program social events will be required. Excellent writing and communication skills required, and providing writing samples is strongly recommended.

Familiarity with social media (WordPress), Digication, Adobe Creative Suite, and print production required. The supervisor for the MALS/IDS Student Worker is the Associate Director; the Student Worker will work with Program Director on special projects and for general operational support.

Principle Duties, Responsibilities, and Other Job Related Information:

  • Helping create and maintain MALS/IDS online presence: blog, newsletter, monthly email newsletters, email, and hard copy communication. Typing and filing, other general office duties (i.e. photocopying, filing, scanning, etc.) Interviewing, writing, proofreading for all program publications, both online and in print. Maintaining/updating program documentation (60%)
  • Assisting and managing projects and working with department members on various tasks/projects as assigned (i.e. running errands,distributing mail, etc.)  Helping our graduate students set up and maintain their Digication portfolios. Event planning (30%)
  • Assisting with phone calls, walk-ins, email (10%)

Position Requirements (Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required):

  • Strong communication skills; excellent writing and proofreading skills required
  • Minimum B average in courses requiring writing
  • Ability to work independently with little to no supervision and meet deadlines
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • General office skills such as filing, scanning, photocopying, answering the phone, customer service:  1 year required
  • Internet/email experience: 1 year required
  • Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel), Adobe Suite, WordPress: 2 years required
  • Upper level, Honors, and graduate students encouraged to apply

Salary: $11.00/hourly
