Like it or not, summer is officially over and we’re coming up on the last weekend in September. Not sure how you’re going to spend the weekend yet? Don’t worry, Ex Libris has some suggestions for you!
1.) Work on your Two-Year College Teaching Internship Application
Are you working on your Two-Year College Teaching Certificate and interested in an internship at a local two-year college this Spring? The application deadline is October 14. These internships are for Spring SEMESTER, which runs January to mid-May. (The exception to this calendar is Robert Morris University, where an internship runs from early December to late April.)
If you are interested in a two-year college teaching internship and you have NOT yet spoken with Dr. Carolyn Goffman, please do so before you apply. Contact her at cgoffman@depaul.edu to signify your interest in the program and to arrange a meeting to talk about how it will fit into your course of studies; or, of course, contact her simply to find out more about this program.
If you have already talked with Dr. Goffman, you may go ahead and EMAIL the following materials to her:
- Cover letter, explaining your interest in two-year college teaching
- Transcripts from graduate and undergraduate programs (unofficial copies are fine)
- Curriculum Vitae that includes names of two references (you do not need to provide letters at this time)
- Writing Sample: a recent course paper or other non-fiction writing is fine.
2.) Consider nominating yourself for Graduate Student Representative
The English Department is seeking two graduate students to represent English students in departmental discussions and decisions. The student representatives will join faculty on the department’s Personnel Committee to help evaluate the teaching any professors up for tenure or promotion. Student representatives typically attend Personnel Committee meetings and relevant department, college, and university meetings; visit professors’ classes and write brief reports on their teaching; and write a formal report representing the views of former students. They may also be asked to attend one or two recruitment events.
Nominees should have some familiarity with the department, its students, and its faculty and must be at DePaul for the entire academic year, since meetings will take place in each quarter.
Self-nominations should be submitted by email to Professor John Shanahan (jshanah1@depaul.edu) by Tuesday, Sept. 27th. Include your name, contact information, and a very short statement explaining your interest in and qualifications for being a student representative
Nominees’ names and statements will be posted in McGaw Hall and emailed to all current English graduate students for a vote. The vote will take place via email between Sept. 28th and Oct. 3rd, 2011.

3) Get your tickets for a One Book One Chicago event at the Biograph Theater
Augie March, the titular protagonist of this year’s One Book One Chicago selection, takes the stage– literally– this Monday Sept. 26 at 6:30 pm right in the neighborhood at the Victory Gardens Biograph Theater, 2433 N. Lincoln Ave. for I Am Augie: A Staged Reading.
Some of Chicago’s theater companies, including Victory Gardens, Steppenwolf, Lookingglass and Teatro Vista, come together for a remarkable gathering of talent, all reading from The Adventures of Augie March. Hear Augie’s voice from Deanna Dunagan, Eddie Torres, Martha Lavey, Andrew White, Tanya Saracho and others.

4) Enjoy a great Chicago museum– for free!
Didn’t think this post could get better than $6 theater tickets? How about free museum admission?
This Saturday, Sept. 24 is Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day, where you can print off a free pass and get into any of the participating museums for free, and there are over twenty museums participating in the Chicagoland area.
