Summer Literary Seminars (SLS) has extended the deadline for its 2015 literary contest to midnight tonight (February 17, 2015). The judges for the contest are Aimee Bender (fiction), Philip Graham (nonfiction), and Brenda Shaughnessy (poetry). The winners of this year’s contest will not only garner prizes sponsored by Guernica, Fence magazine, Ninth Letter, and Graywolf Press but will also receive tuition, airfare, and accommodations to the 2015 DISQUIET International Program in Lisbon, Portugal.

Congratulations to MAW alumnus Brian South, a Naperville North High School English teacher whose self-published debut novel—The Zombie Sheriff Takes Tucson: A Love Story—will be available for purchase on Friday, February 20. See this Chicago Tribune story for more details.

The MAE winter information session will take place on Wednesday, March 11, at 6 p.m. in Room 101 of the Welcome Center. The MAWP winter information session will take place on Thursday, February 19, at 6 p.m. in Room 103 of the Welcome Center.  

A career panel featuring DePaul alumni Tim Hillegonds, Zack Carlstrom, and Marcy Farrey will take place on the evening of Wednesday, February 25, in ALH 103. Come for the wisdom; stay for the snacks. See the flyer below for more information.  

Women & Children First, an independent bookstore in Andersonville, is holding an all-day grand reopening open house on Saturday, February 21. Visitors can mosey around the renovated shop while partaking of light refreshments. Live music by local performers begins midafternoon. The calendar of events at Women & Children First includes author readings, panel discussions, and book club meetings. 

The Lascaux Review is accepting submissions for the Lascaux Prize in Flash Fiction and its new literary journal, Easy Street. See the flyer below for more information.

DePaul’s writing, rhetoric, and discourse (WRD) department will hold an information session about its graduate certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) on Thursday, February 26, at 5 p.m. in SAC 301. Students who complete the graduate certificate in TESOL will have the opportunity to teach English for a year at Huaqiao University. Yangping Zeng, WRD’s current visiting scholar from Huaqiao, will be in attendance at the information session.

Glimmer Train is accepting submissions for its Short Story Award for New Writers through February 28, 2015. Writers may submit stories of up to 12,000 words. The reading fee is $15 per story. The winner will receive $1,500 and publication in Issue 96 of Glimmer Train.  

Phoebe: Journal of Literature and Art, a literary journal of George Mason University’s MFA Program, is accepting submissions for its annual fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry contests. The submission deadline is March 1, 2015.  Judges Ramona Ausubel (fiction), Roxane Gay (nonfiction), and Brian Teare (poetry) will choose the winners in each category. Winners receive $850 and publication in an online issue of Phoebe.
