Tomorrow (Saturday, November 1) marks the start of National Novel Writing Month. Writers all over the world pledge to write 50,000 words in 30 days. In 2013, I participated in (“won,” in NaNoWriMo terms) National Novel Writing Month for the first time. I’m sitting it out this year, but I hope to ride that particular carousel of whimsy again. The Chicago Humanities Festival, in partnership with the Baskes Family and the History of Science Society, is offering a graduate student seminar with Peter Galison on Sunday, November 9. Professor Galison is the Pellegrino University Professor in History of Science and Physics and Director of the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments at Harvard University. The Word’s Worth Committee at Illinois State University seeks paper proposals from graduate students for the ISU Word’s Worth Conference. The 2015 conference theme is transgressions. The conference will take place on Friday, April 17, 2015. Students may submit their proposals through this online form by Thursday, January 15, 2015. Carolyn Rudinsky (MAE) and Ariel Jefferson-Ray (MAE) have been selected as the graduate student representatives on this year’s English Department Personnel Committee. They will represent DePaul’s MAE and MAWP students in department discussions and decisions, including the formal reviews that the Committee conducts to evaluate the work of tenure-track faculty.  They will be attending department meetings, attending Personnel Committee meetings, contacting previous students of the professor going up for review, visiting that professor’s classes, and writing an assessment of that professor’s teaching.

Story Club Magazine is throwing a fundraising party at the Green Mill in Uptown on Sunday, November 2, at 1 p.m.   Top Hats & Tales will feature food from First Slice Pie Cafe,  live music from The Morphtet, and performances by luminaries of Chicago’s live lit scene. The storytelling lineup comprises Don Hall, Jennifer Peepas, Samantha Irby, Megan Stielstra, Lily Be, and Kelsie Huff. Tickets cost $20. The Waywiser Press is accepting first- and second-book manuscripts for the tenth annual Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize through December 1, 2014. The winning manuscript will receive £1,750 or $3,000, publication by Waywiser in both the UK and USA, and a reading with the judge at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. The Gene Siskel Film Center will screen Creative Writing on October 24, 26, and 30. Director Seth McClellan—a Chicago indie filmmaker and college writing/media professor—and members of the cast and crew will be present for audience discussion at all screenings.
