The DePaul Visiting Writers’ Series is excited to announce that nonfiction writer Jen Percy will be doing a reading at DePaul on February 20th at 6 p.m. in Richardson 115. Percy will be reading from her upcoming nonfiction novel Demon Camp, which begins with the story of a Special Ops soldier who believes his PTSD is caused by demons, but becomes about the author’s obsession with the strange and mesmerizing world she encounters. The Writers Guild, part of the University Center for Writing-based Learning’s Writing Groups program, is hosting a student reading next week at the DePaul Student Center. The event, titled “Aloud!,” will take place on Monday, February 11th, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Student Center atrium, and will feature poetry, fiction, and essays by undergraduate and graduate students in the DePaul English department who have been participating in the Writers Guild. This Thursday, February 7th, the staff of Threshold literary journal would like to invite everyone to come celebrate the work of DePaul writers in a salon-style reading. REMINDER: in order for the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences to verify the completion of academic requirements, students must apply for degree conferral (graduation) in advance to have a degree posted and to receive a diploma. If you plan on graduating in June of 2013, the deadline to apply for degree conferral as well as the Commencement ceremony is this Friday, February 1st. Today in Student News, congratulations to MAWP student Raul Palma, who has won first place in the Mary Mackey Short Story contest for his story “Amaranthus.” As the first place winner of this competition, Raul has been invited to read his story in San Francisco in March and was awarded a $100 prize. As we posted earlier in Student News, “Amaranthus” is also scheduled to be published in 34th Parallel Magazine. This Monday, writer Lois Leveen will be speaking at an event sponsored by The Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and Discourse and the Department of African and Black Diaspora Studies. Leveen is the author of The Secrets of Mary Bowser, a recent novel about a historical figure, Mary Bowser, a freed slave who later became a Union spy.
