As final grades roll-in, Ex Libris wants to offer its congratulations to all English graduate students for their hard work this year! Kudos, you make this department great. Two new summer employment opportunities are being offered to DePaul graduate students. Best-selling author Stacey Ballis is seeking an intern to do research for her new novel. She is looking into the Regency period of British literature – specifically, people in Jane Austen’s circle. Voting is open for the Chicago Reader’s annual Best of Chicago awards and DePaul’s own Kathleen Rooney has been nominated for the category of Best Novelist! Kathleen has been making waves and garnering well deserved accolades with her new novel, Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk. An urban love-letter and deftly crafted portrait of a powerful woman, Lillian Boxfish has been called, “prescient and quick….a perfect fusing of subject and writer, idea and ideal” by the Tribune. Congratulations to MAE Mihaela Stoica who will be presenting a paper on ambivalent masculinity in James Tiptree, Jr’s novella “Huston, Houston, Do You Read?” at the 2017 Science Fiction Research Association annual conference. The five day conference hosted by the University of California at Riverside takes place from June 27 to July 1 with the theme “Unknown Pasts/Unseen Futures.” Find a full schedule of presenters is available here. The American Writers Museum, which opened Thursday in downtown Chicago, is offering special free entry to DePaul English students. The museum will be hosting WGN’s TV’s Around Town and during the session from 7:45 AM to 10:00 AM this Friday, May 26 when it is offering the free admission. As the quarter inches closer to summer break, Ex Libris would like to update folks on a few awesome accomplishments from the last few weeks. First, a kudos to Dave Welch who will be spending part of his summer at the Sewanee Writer’s Conference, and will have his tuition paid as their Tennessee Williams Scholar. Great work Dave! Next, two professors in the department are recent gran winners! Black Lawrence Press’s biannual Black River Chapbook Competition will stop accepting submissions next Wednesday, May 31! The competition is open to new emerging and established writers. They are accepting chapbooks of poems or short fiction between 16-36 pages in length. Winners will receive book publication, a $500 cash award, and ten copies of the book. The launch for Crook & Folly’s 37th edition will be Thursday, May 25! The event will celebrate the latest release of DePaul’s award winning journal of art and literature. The event takes place from 5:00-7:00 pm on Arts & Letters Third Floor Atrium.
