Candidates are required to have at least a BA and need to make a six month, 30 hour/week commitment. Next Tuesday, May 16, the Women’s Center will be holding an antiracist conversation and workshop sponsored by the Chicago chapter of Showing Up For Racial Justice (SURJ). The SURJ team will guide participants on the history of SURJ and racial justice organizing in Chicago and then go through skills training on alternatives to policing and calling the police. This year the DePaul Humanities Center’s annual Humanities Laureate Award will be given to the Natives at Standing Rock in recognition of the ethical, political, and cultural importance of their heroic resistance against the Dakota Access Pipeline and continued struggle against state oppression of Native Americans. Three Native activists will be accepting the award on behalf of the larger community. The ceremony and panel discussion takes place Wednesday, May 17 from 7:00-8:30 PM in the Student Center Room 120. One the first museum’s dedicated explicitly to celebrating the work, lives, and legacies of American writers will be opening in Chicago this month! The American Writers Museum will open to the public on May 18. The modern museum features not only some rare literary items – including Jack Kerouac’s On the Road scroll – but also a decidedly modern approach to museum layout. The AWM will incorporate touch screens, digital archives, and recorded tours to explore the long history of writing and literature in this country. Entries of fiction, essays, and poetry are being accepted for the New Letters Literary Awards until Thursday, May 18. Winners receive a $1,500 cash prize and publication, all entries are considered for publication, and entrants receive a year-long subscription to New Letters. This Monday, May 8 the Field Museum will be hosting “Where Will Millennials Take Us: A New Generation Transforms the Gender Structure” by Dr. Barbara J. Risman from the University of Illinois at Chicago. The lecture takes place at 12:00 PM in the Founders’ Room. The event is part of the Field Museum’s new lecture series Women in Science. The Masters Review, in collaboration with PEN America and Poets & Writers, is hosting a flash fiction contest with a $2,000 prize! The contest is for emerging writers only, and only accepts previously unpublished stories. All submissions must be under 1,000 words. First prize also includes publication; second and third place winners receive $200 and $100 respectively. The deadline for submissions is May 31. Submit online here. Building Communities, Ending Violence is hosting an event featuring professors and community members discussing healing justice practices, self-love in movement building. The event takes place May 5 in Arts and Letters Room 306. The event will feature a roundtable and conversation with Laila Farah, Ann Russo, Misty De Berry, Mary Hazboun, and Shana Bahemat as well as Misty De Berry sharing Reiki practices and Beth Catlett and Tracy Bleier sharing yoga practices.
