Las Angeles-based ideas magazine Zócal Public Square is open for submissions for their 6th annual poetry prize . They are searching for a U.S. poet whose poem best evokes a connection to place. The winner will receive $500 and will be published by Zócal online. There is no registration fee and entrants can send up to three poems. The deadline is February 3. Find out more and submit online.

DePaul English faculty, staff, and students are invited to join the Art Institute in celebrating the centennial of beloved, profoundly talented, and Pulitzer Prize winning poet Gwendolyn Brooks. The event will feature five Pulitzer Prize winning poets – Rita Dove, Yusef Komunyakaa, Natasha Trethewey, Tracy Smith and Gregory Pardlo – reading their favorite poem from Miss Brooks, followed by a conversation moderated by award-winning journalist and author Natalie Moore. Black Lawrence Press’s annual Big Moose Prize will be closed for submissions next Tuesday, January 31! The Big Moose Prize is searching for an unpublished novel from new, emerging, and established writers. The winner receives book publication, a $1,000 cash award, and ten copies of the book. Manuscripts between 90-1,000 pages in length are accepted. Find full details and submit online. As a reminder, The Chicago Tribune will close submissions to their 2017 Nelson Algren Literary Contest on January 31! They are accepting submission of 8,000 words with a limit of two stories per author. There is no entry fee. The winner will receive $3,500. Submit online here. The English Department received wonderful news this week that alumnus John C. Lillig was named a partner at Hoogendoorn & Talbot LLP, effective January 2017! Previously, John had been an associate at the firm since 2010. He concentrates his practice on counseling for-profit and non-profit corporations and individuals on transactional, real estate, and copyright matters. His clients include several writers and filmmakers, and he is on the Board of Directors of Polyphony H.S., a non-profit literary magazine for high school writers and editors founded by Chicago author Billy Lombardo.
