Apply for Graduate Assistantships by January 15

A reminder to graduate students (or prospective students) that deadlines for positions as a English Department Graduate Assistant are due January 15! Graduate assistants work roughly 20 hours  a week in the department and receive a tuition waiver for up to 12 courses and a $7,500 stipend. Call for Submissions: The Dialogue Between Science and Religion

Creative Nonfiction and Issues in Science and Technology are currently seeking submissions for their joint writing contest aimed at exploring and expanding the dialogue between religion and science. The contest is seeking original narratives, creative nonfiction pieces, and research work with a narrative focus. Essays should be unpublished and no longer than 5,000 words. There is a $20 reading fee. Prizes include $10,000 first place, $5,000 runner-up, five $500 honorable mentions, and publication for winning essays. Submissions are due Monday, December 12. 9th Annual Nazim Hikmet Poetry Competition

Submissions for the Nazim Hikmet Poetry Competition are now open. The competition is accepting three unpublished poems, there is a $10 submission fee, and submissions are due January 15. Winners receive an award of $100 and will be invited to read their poems at the 9th Annual Nazim Hikmet Poetry Festival on April 9th in Cary, North Carolina. Winners and honorable mentions will be included in the annual anthology as well as published on the Festival website. Find out full information online.

Chicago Book Fairs this November!

Two exciting Chicago book fairs will be held in Chicago this month! The Chicago Book Expo, hosted by the Creative Writing Department of Columbia College, is a celebration of small Chicago presses including a book fair, readings and events. The fair takes place on Sunday, November 13 from 12:00-5:00 pm at Columbia College (1104 S Wabash). Find the full schedule here. This November Chicago will also host Curbside Splendor Bookfort Fair. Writer Advice’s SCINTILLATING STARTS Contest

Writer Advice, online aid for writers, is open for submissions for their fiction, memoir, and creative nonfiction contest Scintillating Starts. Send in opening paragraphs, up to 1,000 words, to Writer Advice by December 1st. There is a $15 submission fee and a cash award of $210 that will be split among selected winners. The contest is open to anyone who has not signed a contract for the book they submit. Submit online.

Open Submissions: MENAGE

MENAGE a new online weekly literary journal is now open for submissions. MENAGE, launching late fall, will publish 2-4 poems in translation and in conversation with one another this week. Poets slated so far include Kim Sowol, Oscar Hahn, and Lorenzo Carlucci. Send submissions of 3-5 poems to editor@menagemagazine.com. Attachments are preferred. When submitting translations, please include the original.

2016 Chicago Colloquium on Digital Humanities and Computer Sciences

On November 11-13 the University of Illinois at Chicago will be hosting the 2016 Chicago Colloquium on Digital Humanities and Computer Sciences (DHCS). Registration for the event is free for DePaul students. The weekend includes a workshop at the Newberry library, the keynote speaker is Geoffrey Rockwell, and multiple DePaul professors will be presenting.
