Purdue University has announced a call for submissions to a new symposium focusing on interdisciplinary research in the fields of linguistics and language use. They invite submissions of original research papers from all areas of linguistics, applied linguistics, literature, second language studies, and cultural studies of any language or language group to be presented in 20-minute talks or posters. The Writer is now accepting fiction submissions for their “Two Roads Diverge” short story contest. The contest asks for a 2,000 word short story responding to two quotes from novelist Colum McCann who will be the contest judge. Prizes include: $1,000 cash prize for the winner and publication in March 2016 print issue of The Writer, runner-up and third place will receive cash prize of $500 and $250 respectively and publication on The Writer‘s website. The University of North Carolina Wilmington‘s (UNCW) interdisciplinary journal Palaver is seeking academic submissions.  Palaver is an online journal housed in UNCW’s Graduate Liberal Studies Program and are looking for content that, “defy the confines of a single discipline.” Submissions should be typed, double-spaced, and follow MLA guidelines. Due to the volume of submissions Palaver receives, they ask that academic pieces run no longer than twenty five pages. Palaver does not accept previously published work, be it print or online. The Guild Literary Complex is now accepting submissions for their 2015 prose awards for short fiction and non-fiction. Every fall, the Guild Complex acknowledges emerging and established writers via a judged competition and recognition at the historic Chopin Theatre in Chicago. A cash prize of $500 in each category (fiction and non-fiction) will be awarded to an original unpublished work. The deadline to submit is Thursday, October 22 at 5:00 pm. The PEN/Fusion Emerging Writers Prize has extended their deadline until October 26th. The prize recognizes a promising young writer under the age of 35 for an unpublished work of fiction that addresses a global and/or multicultural issue. The winner will receive a $10,000 cash prize and be honored at the 2016 PEN Awards Ceremony next spring. Eligible applicants will have the chance to have their work read by distinguished writers and editors Marie Arana, Manuel Gonzales, and Johnny Temple of Akashic Books. Columbia: A Journal of Literature and Art is now accepting original work in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for the Issue 54 Writing Contest. One winner from each genre will receive a $500 cash prize and publication in Issue 54, due out this spring. All entries will be considered for online publication. The Miami University Press is now accepting submissions through October 15th for the 2016 Novella Prize. Submissions must be between 18,000 and 40,000 words and require a $25 reading fee. The Novella Prize winner is offered $750 against royalties, a standard contract, publication, and ten copies of the book. MAE students: Chicago’s Newberry Library Center for Renaissance Studies is calling for submissions to their 2016 Multidisciplinary Graduate Student Conference. They invite abstracts for 20-minute papers from master’s or PhD students from any discipline on any medieval, Renaissance, or early modern topic in Europe, the Americas, or the Mediterranean world. Punctuate is a new magazine of creative nonfiction, published online, and once annually in print, by Columbia College Chicago. The first issue will be launched online on October 15th. Punctuate accepts submissions year-round in order to release online content on a weekly basis. Writers can send their nonfiction of any length, style, or subject here and follow Punctuate on Facebook.

Black Lawrence Press is now accepting submissions for their Fall 2015 Black River Chapbook Competition. The Black River chapbook Competition is a semi-annual prize for a chapbook of short fiction or poems open to new, emerging, or established writers. The Lascaux Review is now accepting poetry submissions for The Lascaux Prize in Poetry. Deadline for submission is September 30, 2015. Poems may be previously published or unpublished, and simultaneous submissions are accepted. Winner receives $1,000 and publication in The Lascaux Review. Winner and all finalists will be published in The 2016 Lascaux Prize Anthology.  Entry fee is $10.
