DePaul’s Continuing & Professional Education offers a series of new writing offerings for both professional and creative growth. After running a series of successful seminars called Grant Writing for Beginners, DePaul’s CPE will be offering a Certificate in Grant Writing (March 19-May 21, 2011). While DePaul University was on break for a month and a half, we graduate students embarked on our own projects we had been putting off for a whole quarter while we frantically scraped assignments together for classes and finals. During winter break, some of us continued to work our full or part time jobs. Others of us snuggled up on the couch for a consecutive 25 days watching Home Alone over and over or catching up on our favorite fall TV shows. Tamara Ghattas (MAWP ’10) was the first place winner (Young Adult Division) in the Union League Civic & Arts Foundation’s Creative Writing Competition. Her winning story, “In Blue Seclusion,” will be published in a winner’s anthology this year. The CAF Creative Writing Competition for Young Writers is, according to Examiner.com, the best contest in the Midwest. There is very generous prize money, no entry fee, and a focus on students who live or study within 100 miles of the Loop.

Our alumni have been busy this summer with jobs, publications, and writing projects. Read along for news from some of our recent graduates. Krystal Baugher (MAWP ’10) has just published an article in the online journal Elephant.  The article has the provocative title of “More Sex with More People: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Open Relationships”. Matt Bowen (MAWP) spent seven seasons in the NFL as a strong safety with the Rams, Packers, Redskins and Bills, including playing for Lovie Smith and Mike Martz in St. Louis.
