Ex Libris would like to extend congratulations to two professors with exciting news this Spring Quarter. First off, a huge congrats and a best wishes to adjunct faculty member Chris Eagle! Chris has accepted a full-time position as a Senior Lecturer in the Medical Humanities at Emory University’s Center for the Study of Human Health. For the past three years, Chris has taught a variety of courses at DePaul and been an essential part in our academic environment. Ex Libris would like to offer early congratulations to Professor Paula McQuade for her upcoming publication Catechisms and Women’s Writing in Seventeenth Century England. The book is due out June of this year from Cambridge University Press. See the image above for a sneak-peak at the beautiful cover design. We couldn’t be more proud Paula!

The LAS Graduate Student Conference is happening this Friday! The conference showcases work from graduate students across the university, and is a unique opportunity to see the projects your DePaul colleagues have been working on. Students are especially encouraged to support their fellow English students presenting. During session I from 1:30-2:45, Mihaela Stoica (MAE),  Jordan Weber (MAE), and Katelynn Moxon (MAWP) will be presenting in McGowan South Room 103. Joshua Brown (MAE) will be presenting during session II from 3:45-5:00 in McGowan South Room 105. Take time to celebrate the work of your peers!

The English Department received wonderful news this week that alumnus John C. Lillig was named a partner at Hoogendoorn & Talbot LLP, effective January 2017! Previously, John had been an associate at the firm since 2010. He concentrates his practice on counseling for-profit and non-profit corporations and individuals on transactional, real estate, and copyright matters. His clients include several writers and filmmakers, and he is on the Board of Directors of Polyphony H.S., a non-profit literary magazine for high school writers and editors founded by Chicago author Billy Lombardo. Ex Libris wants to give a shout-out to a few members of the DePaul English community we are especially proud of this month! First off, a huge congratulations to Kathleen Rooney for the release of her highly anticipated novel Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk! Can’t wait to read it Kathleen!! Borja Cabada, a recent graduate of the MAWP, has been named winner of the 2016 Logroño Book Award for Emerging Authors in Spain for his novel, The Sound of Atlantis. The English Department is especially thankful for its amazing faculty and staff this holiday season! In particular, the following individuals who won Summer Research Grants from the College of liberal Arts and Sciences! Barrie Jean Borich, for her proposal, “Oh, What a Beautiful City.” Jim Fairhall, for his proposal, “James Joyce, Nature, and the Body.” Paula McQuade, for her proposal, “Popular Print Culture and Mary Cary’s The Ressurrection of the Witnesses (1648; reprint 1653).” Richard Squibbs, for his proposal, “Scorning Sentiment in Tobias Smollet’s Ferdinand Count Fathom.” Congrats all!

Congratulations are in order for English Professor Kathleen Rooney and WRD Professor Eric Plattner, co-editors of the soon to be released René Magritte: Selected Writings! The book collects letters, interviews, and more from modern master René Magritte translating them to English for the first time. In preparation for the official September 22nd event, Kathleen and Eric will be hosting two promotional events. The first takes place at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, September 21 at 57 Street Books. Co-sponsored by the University of Chicago, the editors will discuss their process, Magritte’s art and his writings.
