They will be presenting on their current project “Reading Chicago Reading,” a data-driven study of how, what, and who reads in the Chicago metropolitan area. The Literary Speakers Series kicks of this Fall Quarter with a presentation by Kathleen Rooney and Eric Plattner discussing their new publication Rene Magritte: Selected Writings. The event takes place on Wednesday, November 2 at 4 PM in Arts and Letter Room 413.
Dr. Lisa Lowe, Professor of English and American Studies at Tufts University will be the speaking on campus Wednesday, May 18th in the John T. Richardson library Room 115. Lowe is the author of multiple books including her latest The Intimacies of Four Continents (2015), a study of settler colonialism, transatlantic African slavery and the East Indies and China trades in goods and people as the conditions for modern European liberalism and empire. Professor Kieth Mikos will continue the Literary Studies Speaker Series this quarter with his presentation, “Dots and Dashes – Scraps and Stains: Moving Beyond Dickinson’s Manuscripts.” The event takes place on Thursday, February 25 from 4:30-6:00 pm in Arts and Letters Room 413. Mikos earned his Ph.D. in English from the University of Minnesota. His research and teaching interests include nineteenth- and twentieth-century American literature, culture and technology, and the history of philosophy. Carolyn Goffman will be the first winter presenter for the Literary Studies Speakers Series. On Wednesday, January 27 from 4:30-6:00 pm in Arts and Letter Room 108, Professor Goffman will present “Re-Purposing the American Mission: The Istanbul (Not Constantinople) Women’s College.” Professor Goffman specializes in postcolonial literature and theory, with a particular interest in womens education in the Middle East. She researches and writes on American missionary educators and their students in the Ottoman Empire, and she has spent much time in Turkey.
