According to the Chicago Public Library, there were 821 censorship attempts on library books in 2024, the third highest number of book challenges recorded by the American Library Association‘s Office for Intellectual Freedom. This is why CPL is committed to supporting Chicagoan’s freedom to read and is the leader of the Book Sanctuary Movement. Interested in getting involved this week? Join the LatinX Book Club this month in reading and discussing the novel Olga Dies Dreaming by Xóchitl González. The first 15 students who register will receive a FREE COPY of the book! On Wednesday, November 19, González will visit DePaul for an in-person discussion. Sign up here.

On Sunday, October 5, Avery Cunningham (MAWP ’16) will be at the Maxwell Street Market from 12-1 p.m. for a discussion around the history of Chicago’s Maxwell Street Market, and the role it plays in her debut novel The Mayor of Maxwell Street (Disney/Hyperion 2024). Books will be available to purchase from Da Book Joint, and Avery will be signing books on site!

Andrew W. Kahrl will join us on campus for a discussion on the racist practices long hidden in the shadows of America’s tax regimes on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at 6 p.m. You can register for free here. Over the weekend, Chicago Humanities wrapped up Pilsen / Little Village Day, which featured a Pilsen Public Art Tour and events with the likes of Cheech Marin (Cheech and Chong) and Zosia Mamet of Girls. But don’t fret, there are plenty of upcoming fall events to attend! Most events include a student discount, which you can select when purchasing tickets.
