The English Institute’s 2016 Conference

Graduate students are encouraged to attend The English Institute’s 75th annual conference, TIME, this year at the University of Chicago. The conference takes place September 16-17 and will cover E.P. Thompson’s 1967 essay, “Time, Work-Discipline, and Industrial Capitalism.” Students can find out more information and a full schedule of the conference here, and register online here. Registration for graduates from non-affiliate institutions (such as DePaul) costs $20. A downloadable PDF of Thompson’s essay can be found here.

End of the Quarter Congratulations

Ex Libris would like to send congratulations not only to our graduates, but also to our hard working faculty and staff. A big congrats to Kathleen Rooney and Michele Morano who were both recipients of 2016 excellence in teaching awards! James Murphy also recently accepted the position of Visiting Professor of Irish Studies and Interim Director of Irish Programs at Boston College for the 2016-17 year. Summer Publishing Opportunities and Events

As classes come to a close and summer break kicks-off, take a look at some of these summer chances to get published and literary events around the city. For creative writers, Prairie Schooner and Blue River are both accepting submissions this summer. Prairie Schooner’s annual summer nonfiction contest is open to all types of creative nonfiction essays up to 5,000 words. The entry fee is $20 and includes a copy of the Spring 2017 issue of Prairie Schooner, in which the winning essay will appear. Submission details here. Great Job Opportunity with the National Writers Series

The National Writers Series and the Traverse Area Intermediate School District (of Traverse City, Michigan) is looking to hire a full-time teacher to be a part of the Front Street Writers Program. The program is a rigorous for-credit high school writing program that will begin Fall 2016. Where the Margins Meet: Guild Literary Complex Benefit Celebration

The Guild Literary Complex is celebrating 27 years of programming literary events in Chicago! The benefit, Where the Margins Meet, will take place on June 22, 2016 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Filament Theater, 4041 N. Milwaukee. Food starts at 6:00 pm and is sponsored by Lagunitas Brewing Co., Revolution Brewing, and Glazed and Infused. Performances from Cyn Vargas, Yung Assata, Adam Gottlieb, and Javon Smith take place from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. Students receive a discount price of $15. Global Voices Launch Party

The Collaborative for Multilingual Writing and Research (CMWR) invites you to the Global Voices launch part and potluck! The party takes place on Friday, June 3 from 1:00-4:00 pm at Chateau Lewis 1411, 25 East Jackson Drive. Celebrate the end of the school year, the start of summer, and the public release of Global Voices annual online publication which collects work from DePaul’s multilingual and multicultural community in a range of genres, from oral narratives to research to photography. Food and drinks will be in plentiful supply, feel free to bring a dish to share!

Glimmer Train’s New Writer Award

The deadline for Glimmer Train‘s New Writer Award is June 30th. The award is open only to emerging writers whose fiction has not appeared in any print publication with a circulation over 5,000. The 1st place winner will be published in Glimmer Train and will receive ten copies of that issue. 2nd and 3rd place will win $500/$300, respectively, or, if accepted for publication $700. Most submissions run 1,500-6,000 words, but stories as long as 12,000 words are accepted. Find full guidelines here.

Submit to Afterimage’s online project Inklight

Art and literary journal Afterimage is seeking works of ekphrasis for their online project “Inklight.” For the project, photographers submit original work, which is selected to be posted on the Afterimage web site. Writers then submit original creative writing inspired by one of the images on the web site (engaging in the process of ekphrasis).
