Women & Children First, an independent bookstore in Andersonville, is holding an all-day grand reopening open house on Saturday, February 21. Visitors can mosey around the renovated shop while partaking of light refreshments. Live music by local performers begins midafternoon. The calendar of events at Women & Children First includes author readings, panel discussions, and book club meetings.

DePaul’s writing, rhetoric, and discourse (WRD) department will hold an information session about its graduate certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) on Thursday, February 26, at 5 p.m. in SAC 301. Students who complete the graduate certificate in TESOL will have the opportunity to teach English for a year at Huaqiao University. Yangping Zeng, WRD’s current visiting scholar from Huaqiao, will be in attendance at the information session.

Glimmer Train is accepting submissions for its Short Story Award for New Writers through February 28, 2015. Writers may submit stories of up to 12,000 words. The reading fee is $15 per story. The winner will receive $1,500 and publication in Issue 96 of Glimmer Train.
Phoebe: Journal of Literature and Art, a literary journal of George Mason University’s MFA Program, is accepting submissions for its annual fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry contests. The submission deadline is March 1, 2015. Judges Ramona Ausubel (fiction), Roxane Gay (nonfiction), and Brian Teare (poetry) will choose the winners in each category. Winners receive $850 and publication in an online issue of Phoebe.
The Office of Adult Student Affairs invites all DePaul graduate students to the Graduate Thesis and Dissertation Conference on Saturday, February 21. This free event, which includes lunch, will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Center on the Lincoln Park campus. Students can register for the conference here.
The Kenyon Review is accepting submissions of up to 1,200 words for its 2015 Short Fiction Contest. The submission deadline is February 28, 2015. The $18 entry fee includes a one-year subscription to the journal. Writers may enter their work here. The Kenyon Review will publish the winning short story in the Jan/Feb 2016 issue, and the author will receive a scholarship to attend the 2015 Kenyon Review Writers Workshop (Session I: June 13–20) in Gambier, Ohio.
Each year, Black Lawrence Press awards the Hudson Prize for an unpublished collection of poems or short stories. The winner of this contest receives book publication, a $1,000 award, and ten copies of the book. The submission deadline for the 2015 Hudson Prize is March 31, 2015.
