DePaul’s English department is seeking two 2014–2015 graduate student representatives—one from the MAE program and one from the MAWP program—to represent English students in departmental discussions and decisions. Student representatives help faculty evaluate the teaching of professors who are going up for tenure or promotion. MAE and MAWP students may submit self-nominations to Ms. Jan Hickey (jhicke11@depaul.edu) by Friday, October 17. Nominees should include their name, contact information, and a statement (200 words maximum) explaining their interest in and qualifications for the position.  

The Luminarts Cultural Foundation at the Union League Club of Chicago is accepting applications for its 2015 creative writing competition. The competition awards five $5,000 grant awards and Luminarts Fellowships across the categories of creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry to young Chicagoland writers (aged 18–30). The Illinois Medieval Association is accepting abstracts for its 32nd annual conference, cosponsored by Saint Louis University (SLU). This year’s theme is “Medieval Narratives.” CONFERENCE DATES: February 20–21, 2015 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS: Cynthia Robinson (Cornell University) and John Van Engen (University of Notre Dame) DEADLINE FOR PROPOSALS:  November 21, 2014 Proposals for both whole sessions and individual papers are welcome. If you’re interested in a two-year college teaching internship for winter/spring 2015 or have any questions about the internship, please contact Dr. Carolyn Goffman at cgoffman@depaul.edu. A teaching internship lasts for a semester (16 weeks). You will register for ENG 509 (Independent Study) for one quarter only, but your internship will last the full semester. The College of Lake County is already taking internship applications. Openings at the Chicago City Colleges will become available later. Robert Morris College (in the Loop) also has internships available; these run from December 2014 to April 2015.

Sunday Salon Chicago returns to Black Rock Pub & Kitchen Sunday, September 28, at 7 p.m. This month’s reading series features DePaul professor Chris Green and former DePaul professor Amina Gautier. On Friday, September 26, The Book Cellar is hosting Chris Green for the launch of Résumé, his latest book of poems, at 7 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. the same night, Amina Gautier reads from Now We Will Be Happy at Women & Children First. One example of Chicago’s thriving live lit scene, 7 Stories: Unscripted takes over Martinʼs Corner Bar in Pilsen (2056 West 22nd Place) this Friday, September 26, at 9 p.m. Emerging writers share their stories in collaborative performances that incorporate live music and visual projection. During intermission, audience members can come onstage to tell brief unscripted stories and compete for free beer.   The Group Project produces 7 Stories on the last Friday of each month. The Center for Renaissance Studies is accepting abstracts for 20-minute papers for its 2015 multidisciplinary graduate student conference (January 22–24, 2015). The conference welcomes proposals from master’s or PhD students from any discipline on any medieval, Renaissance, or early modern topic in Europe, the Americas, or the Mediterranean world.
