Please join the Department of English in congratulating Nancy Grossman on the coming publication of her first novel by Disney/Hyperion! It’s a Young Adult novel, the story of an Amish girl on the brink of rumspringa, the period when Amish adolescents are permitted to run wild as they prepare to make their adult decisions. The working title was “Flight of Fancy,” but it’s since been changed to “A Wandering Heart” and Nancy is hoping that it will change again. The release is planned for the fall of 2012. Sonya Chung, author, professor at Columbia University, and staff writer at The Millions, wrote an article titled “What We Teach When We Teach Writers: On the Quantifiable and the Uncertain.” The article discusses the ups and downs of being a writer, and tries to identify that unquantifiable quality all writers strive for. In the meantime, she suggests, try a quantifiable writing goal: 5 pages a day. What are your writing strategies and goals?
