DePaul English faculty, staff, and students are invited to join the Art Institute in celebrating the centennial of beloved, profoundly talented, and Pulitzer Prize winning poet Gwendolyn Brooks. The event will feature five Pulitzer Prize winning poets – Rita Dove, Yusef Komunyakaa, Natasha Trethewey, Tracy Smith and Gregory Pardlo – reading their favorite poem from Miss Brooks, followed by a conversation moderated by award-winning journalist and author Natalie Moore. Black Lawrence Press’s annual Big Moose Prize will be closed for submissions next Tuesday, January 31! The Big Moose Prize is searching for an unpublished novel from new, emerging, and established writers. The winner receives book publication, a $1,000 cash award, and ten copies of the book. As a reminder, The Chicago Tribune will close submissions to their 2017 Nelson Algren Literary Contest on January 31! They are accepting submission of 8,000 words with a limit of two stories per author. There is no entry fee. The winner will receive $3,500. Submit online here. The English Department received wonderful news this week that alumnus John C. Lillig was named a partner at Hoogendoorn & Talbot LLP, effective January 2017! Previously, John had been an associate at the firm since 2010. He concentrates his practice on counseling for-profit and non-profit corporations and individuals on transactional, real estate, and copyright matters. The Summer Literary Seminars (SLS) are now open for submissions to their 2017 contests in fiction and poetry.
