The DePaul English department’s sixth annual student-run spring conference will take place on Friday, May 8, 2015, in Arts & Letters Hall. DePaulians may submit their original works of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, literary analysis, pedagogical and literary theory, and publishing, professional, and teaching practices. Crab Orchard Review, the literary journal of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, is accepting submissions from graduate and undergraduate students for the Charles Johnson Fiction Award, the Rafael Torch Literary Nonfiction Award, and the Allison Joseph Poetry Award. The winner in each category will receive $1,000 and publication. There is a $5 entry fee. The submission deadline is this Friday (February 20, 2015). Phoebe: Journal of Literature and Art, a literary journal of George Mason University’s MFA Program, is accepting submissions for its annual fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry contests. The submission deadline is March 1, 2015.  Judges Ramona Ausubel (fiction), Roxane Gay (nonfiction), and Brian Teare (poetry) will choose the winners in each category. Winners receive $850 and publication in an online issue of Phoebe.

AWP is offering three scholarships of $500 each to emerging writers who wish to attend a writers’ conference, center, retreat, festival, or residency. See AWP’s Directory of Conferences & Centers for a list of eligible programs. The winners and six finalists will also receive a one-year individual AWP membership. The contest will accept entries via Submittable through March 30, 2015. This year’s judges are Xu Xi for creative nonfiction, Matt Bell for fiction, and Sandra Beasley for poetry.

The submission period for the annual Crazyhorse Prizes in Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poetry is drawing to a close this Saturday, January 31, 2015.  Writers may submit short stories or essays (25 pages max) or up to three poems. The $20 entry fee includes a one-year Crazyhorse subscription. Each winner will receive $2,000 and publication.

DePaul literary magazine Crook & Folly is hosting the first of three workshops this Thursday. Students can receive one-on-one feedback on their writing from the editorial staff. To nab an assigned time slot, students should email their pieces to crookandfolly@gmail.com by Tuesday, January 20, at 7 p.m. Walk-ins are also available on a first-come, first-served basis. Crook & Folly, DePaul’s literary magazine, seeks submissions of fiction, creative nonfiction, micro prose, poetry, and dramatic literature. The submission deadline is February 23. Students can send their work to crookandfolly@gmail.com. Crook & Folly is holding a micro prose event this Thursday, January 15, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Arts & Letters Hall, Room 303. Attendees will learn about micro prose and create their own micro prose pieces.
