Its the English Department’s favorite time of year! The official call-for-submissions for the 8th Annual Spring English Conference (SPEC) has been released! The Spring English Conference is a unique opportunity for DePaul English students from across the entire department – graduate, undergraduate, creative, literary studies, publishing, major, and minors – to come together and share their work in a friendly, comradely environment. The Prairie Schooner Book prize is open for submissions from January 15-March 15. The Colorado Review is currently running their 2017 Nelligan Prize for Short Fiction. The contest accepts previously unpublished short stories under 50 pages with no limit on number of entries. The grand prize is $2,000 and publication in the fall 2017 issue of Colorado Review. The deadline for submissions is March 14. Visit their website or see the flyer above for more details. The deadline for Glimmer Train‘s Short Story Award for New Writers is February 28. The contest is open to emerging writers and the 1st place prize includes publication in Glimmer Train, 10-copies of the issue, and $2,500. DePaul’s award-winning arts and literature magazine Crook & Folly is now accepting submissions for their 2017 issue! Crook & Folly is accepting submissions of poetry, fiction, flash fiction, creative non-fiction, and dramatic literature. Submissions and questions can be sent to crookandfolly@gmail.com.  

Las Angeles-based ideas magazine Zócal Public Square is open for submissions for their 6th annual poetry prize . They are searching for a U.S. poet whose poem best evokes a connection to place. The winner will receive $500 and will be published by Zócal online. There is no registration fee and entrants can send up to three poems. The deadline is February 3. Find out more and submit online.

Black Lawrence Press’s annual Big Moose Prize will be closed for submissions next Tuesday, January 31! The Big Moose Prize is searching for an unpublished novel from new, emerging, and established writers. The winner receives book publication, a $1,000 cash award, and ten copies of the book. The Summer Literary Seminars (SLS) are now open for submissions to their 2017 contests in fiction and poetry. The contests offer writers and opportunity to win full funding for SLS programs in Georgia and Kenya as well as publication in Fence Magazine. The entry fee is $17 and the deadline is February 28.
