DePaul associate professor Miles Harvey and visiting assistant professor Kathleen Rooney will be leading writing workshops at the 2015 Northwestern Summer Writers’ Conference, which will take place July 30–August 1. Writers can register here.
Narrative awards the $4,000 Narrative Prize annually for the best short story, novel excerpt, poem, one-act play, graphic story, or work of literary nonfiction that a new or emerging writer publishes in Narrative. Writers can submit their work here. The deadline for this year’s prize is June 15, 2015.
Glimmer Train is accepting submissions for its Short Story Award for New Writers. The contest is open to writers whose fiction has not appeared in any print publication with a circulation of more than 5,000. The reading fee is $15 per story. The submission deadline is May 31, 2015.

Argonne National Laboratory is hiring a part-time scientific writing coach this summer. The writing coach will help undergraduates in Argonne Education’s 10-week intensive science internship program put together abstracts, scientific reports, and poster presentations. The coach will also provide the summer interns with writing resources, advise students during office hours and one-on-one tutoring sessions, and work with the Argonne team to improve the summer internship program. DePaul associate professor and MAWP director Michele Morano will be reading at Sunday Salon Chicago, a free literary series, on May 31 at 7 p.m. The event will take place in the Roscoe and Damen Room at Riverview Tavern (1958 West Roscoe Street). Other featured readers include Jeffrey Condran, Aviya Kushner, and Jillian Lauren.
Chicago Women in Publishing (CWIP) is hosting a mentorship night and publishing career panel on Monday, May 18, at 6 p.m. in Room 408 of Arts & Letters Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
The inaugural Chicago Young Adult Book Fest will take place on Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. After checking out a variety of panels with YA authors at Conrad Sulzer Regional Library (4455 North Lincoln Avenue, Chicago, IL 60618), attendees can make their way over to The Book Cellar for a reception and book signing.
MAE core requirements ENG 471 and ENG 472 have new names. ENG 471 (the class formerly known as Bibliography and Literary Research) is now Book and Media History. ENG 472 (the class formerly known as Studies in Literary Criticism) is now Literary Theory. Aside from their titles, the courses remain unchanged.
This Friday, May 8, the DePaul English department‘s sixth annual English spring conference will take place in Arts & Letters Hall from noon to 8 p.m. More than forty MAE, MAWP, and undergraduate students will present their academic and creative work. The conference will also include a digital humanities workshop led by alumna Amanda Licastro, a career panel featuring recent graduates, and a keynote address by author Crystal Chan. Refreshments will be available throughout the day, and a reception will conclude the day’s events. The 2015 New Letters Literary Awards are accepting poetry, essay, and fiction submissions. Writers can enter their work for consideration for the following prizes: The $1,500 New Letters Prize for Poetry for the best group of three to six poems The $1,500 Dorothy Cappon Prize for the best essay The $1,500 Alexander Cappon Prize for Fiction for the best short story The submission deadline is midnight on Monday, May May 18.
