Crook & Folly, DePaul’s student journal of literature and art, seeks applications from graduate and undergraduate students for two positions as 2016 editors in chief. The application deadline is Wednesday, April 22. Candidates should email a one-page (250-word) application letter describing relevant experience, commitment, and vision for the magazine as an attachment to Professor Borich (bborich@depaul.edu). Interviews will take place in mid-May.

Tuesday, May 19, 7 p.m. Poetry Foundation 61 West Superior Street Free Admission The Poetry Foundation‘s Open Door reading series presents work from Chicago’s new and emerging poets and highlights the area’s writing programs. Each one-hour event features readings by two Chicagoland college and graduate writing program instructors and two of their current or recent students. May’s Open Door Reading presents Eastern Illinois University’s Charlotte Pence and her student Derick Ledermann along with DePaul University’s David Welch and his former student, MAW alumna Laura Wagner.

Glimmer Train‘s Very Short Fiction Award is now accepting submissions. This contest welcomes any story of up to 3,000 words that has not been accepted for print publication. The reading fee is $15 per story. The prizes are as follows: • First place: $1,500, publication in Glimmer Train Stories, and 20 copies of that issue • Second place: $500 (or, if accepted for publication, $700 and 10 copies) • Third place: $300 (or, if accepted for publication, $700 and 10 copies) The submission deadline is April 30, 2015.

Black Warrior Review is accepting submissions for its eleventh annual contest starting today, April 1. This year’s guest judges are Heather Christle (poetry), Alissa Nutting (fiction/prose), and Mary Roach (nonfiction). The submission deadline is September 1, 2015. The $20 entry fee includes a one-year subscription to Black Warrior Review. Writers may submit their work here. Winners in each genre will receive a $1,000 prize and publication in BWR 42.2, Spring/Summer 2016. Three runners-up will receive $100 in addition to publication.

The deadline to apply for spring quarter 2015 partial tuition scholarship (PTS) awards is Thursday, April 9. The Illinois Emerging Writers Competition is accepting submissions for the Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award. The award for first place is $500; second place is $300 and third place is $100. Winning poems also will be submitted for possible publication in Bluestem, Ninth Letter, Quiddity, and RHINO journals and Poetic License Press publications. Nonprofit Elk River Arts & Lectures is hosting its inaugural Elk River Writers Workshop October 22–25, 2015, at Chico Hot Springs Resort in Paradise Valley, Montana. The workshop accepts applications on a rolling basis, starting today. The cost of attendance is $1,425.

An information session on two-year college teaching will take place on Tuesday, April 7, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Past teaching interns and current faculty at area colleges will talk about their experiences.
