Looking to present your research and connect with other scholars in the Black Studies field? Jump in the info session fro the National Council for Black Studies conference! Undergrads and Grads have the opportunity to submit a proposal for the panel, and if accepted, would have the trip paid for by a grant from the College of LAS. The information session, led by CBD’s Assistant Director, Jennifer Gardner, will describe the conference a little more, and how to apply. An Inconvenient Hour: Prose, Poetry, & Coffee is a reading series taking place on Saturdays at Monarch Community Cafe in Rogers Park. Their next event will take place on October 10th at 6 PM and feature, among other authors, DePaul professor Gazmend Kapllani. Professor Kapllani has authored two collections of poetry in Albanian and four novels written in both Greek and Albanian, in addition to numerous scholarly essays. His work centers on themes of migration, border, totalitarianism, and Balkan history.
The Poets and Writer’s Magazine is presenting a virtual conversation and discussion with five spotlighted authors tomorrow, Wednesday the 23rd at 6 PM CDT. Nita Noveno, Phill Branch, Megan O’Grady, Joseph Trinidad, and Elena Dudum will read from their essays, memoirs, and hybrid nonfiction and discuss their books with Poets & Writers Magazine senior editor India Lena González. New York based publishing house Nightboat is opening applications for their third editorial fellowship. The fellowship is designed to provide an aspiring editor with $10,000, along with the resources and mentorship necessary to develop and publish a book project of their choosing over the course of two years. Black and/or Indigenous editors, and/or editors from communities historically underrepresented in the publishing workforce are especially encouraged to apply. Anna Sortino, 2019 graduate of DePaul’s MAWP program and a lifelong Cubs fan, threw out the first pitch at a Cubs game this week. Her novels center on disabled characters living their lives and falling in love and have earned national recognition.
