The Collaborative for Multilingual Writing and Research (CMWR) invites you to the Global Voices launch part and potluck! The party takes place on Friday, June 3 from 1:00-4:00 pm at Chateau Lewis 1411, 25 East Jackson Drive. Celebrate the end of the school year, the start of summer, and the public release of Global Voices annual online publication which collects work from DePaul’s multilingual and multicultural community in a range of genres, from oral narratives to research to photography. Food and drinks will be in plentiful supply, feel free to bring a dish to share!

The deadline for Glimmer Train‘s New Writer Award is June 30th. The award is open only to emerging writers whose fiction has not appeared in any print publication with a circulation over 5,000. The 1st place winner will be published in Glimmer Train and will receive ten copies of that issue. 2nd and 3rd place will win $500/$300, respectively, or, if accepted for publication $700. Most submissions run 1,500-6,000 words, but stories as long as 12,000 words are accepted. Find full guidelines here.
Art and literary journal Afterimage is seeking works of ekphrasis for their online project “Inklight.” For the project, photographers submit original work, which is selected to be posted on the Afterimage web site. Writers then submit original creative writing inspired by one of the images on the web site (engaging in the process of ekphrasis). The DePaul Career Center, Office of Multicultural Student Success (OMSS), University Center for Writing-based Learning, and the Library Learning Commons are proud to announce this quarter’s Professional Development Night, which will be held on Wednesday, May 25th from 5:00pm-7:00pm. Professional Development Night is an event for students to receive help on their resumes, develop a LinkedIn profile, interviewing tips, and other professional development topic areas. The Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park has announced a new project which aims to promote new creative writing, and is designed with new writers in mind, the Hemingway Shorts. Submissions are due June 15, 2016. A winning submission will receive $500. Find full details here.

Sunday Salon Chicago continues this month with a reading on Sunday, May 22nd at 7:00 pm at the Riverview Tavern, 1958 Roscoe Avenue. Readers include Thea Goodman, Sarah Hollenbeck, Toni Nealie, Zoe Zolbrod, and DePaul MAWP professor David Welch. The event is free and open to the public.
The deadline is approaching for the Black River Chapbook Competition from Black Lawrence Press. The biannual competition accepts unpublished chapbooks of poems or short fiction between 16 and 36 pages in length. The contest is open to new, emerging, and established writers. Winners receive publication, a $500 cash reward, and ten copies of the book. Spring entry closes May 31st, and entry reopens for the second period on September 1st. Celebrating the release of Her Own Accord: Women on Identity, Culture, and Community, authors Nina Barrett, Cristina Henriquez, and Laura Negrete will be on campus to participate in a panel discussion on their creative process and their experiences as women. The event takes place on Tuesday, May 17 from 6:30-8:30 PM in Cortelyou Commons.
