The Waywiser Press is accepting first- and second-book manuscripts for the tenth annual Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize through December 1, 2014. The winning manuscript will receive £1,750 or $3,000, publication by Waywiser in both the UK and USA, and a reading with the judge at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. On Friday, October 31, story aficionados can celebrate Halloween with 7 Stories: Bird Eat Bird at Martinʼs Corner Bar in Pilsen (2056 West 22nd Place). Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 9 p.m.  What to Expect: Emerging writers share their stories in collaborative performances that incorporate live music and visual projection. During intermission, audience members can come onstage to tell brief unscripted stories and compete for free beer. There will also be a costume contest with a cash prize. In January, the Reader will publish its 15th annual Pure Fiction issue, a collection of short stories submitted by mostly local fiction writers paired with illustrations by mostly local artists. The submission deadline is November 15. Submit stories of up to 3,000 words to fiction@chicagoreader.com. The Reader accepts multiple submissions and pays writers for the stories it publishes. Teachers, you all on the front lines of molding young minds—this one’s for you. In Fact Books, a new book imprint supported by the Creative Nonfiction Foundation, is putting together a Becoming a Teacher anthology. It’s accepting submissions from elementary and secondary school teachers through March 9, 2015. Essays must be previously unpublished and no longer than 4,500 words.  Submit your true stories and read the guidelines here.

DePaul’s Diversity Images Student Photo Competition is accepting submissions from all currently enrolled students.   Submit one entry via email to diversityimages@depaul.edu by November 25, 2014. Late entries will not be accepted. DePaul MAWP student Kate O’Brien is working on a book—and seeking submissions. Kate’s compiling a collection of essays from language teachers and tutors around the globe with a specific focus on composition studies, or the teaching and tutoring of writing, to multilingual writers. The Chicago Humanities Festival (CHF) is now accepting applications for EdLab: Spring 2015. This professional development program focuses on The American Revolution, a performance piece by Theater Unspeakable. Nightlight Reading is accepting submissions geared to boys aged 10–12 for its inaugural short story contest. The nonprofit aims “to fund and promote literature that appeals to boys and keeps them engaged and reading.” The 2014 contest theme is adventure. Writers may submit pieces of up to 5,000 words (20 pages). Submit your entry here by December 31, 2014.  

The Luminarts Cultural Foundation at the Union League Club of Chicago is accepting applications for its 2015 creative writing competition. The competition awards five $5,000 grant awards and Luminarts Fellowships across the categories of creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry to young Chicagoland writers (aged 18–30). The Illinois Medieval Association is accepting abstracts for its 32nd annual conference, cosponsored by Saint Louis University (SLU). This year’s theme is “Medieval Narratives.” CONFERENCE DATES: February 20–21, 2015 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS: Cynthia Robinson (Cornell University) and John Van Engen (University of Notre Dame) DEADLINE FOR PROPOSALS:  November 21, 2014 Proposals for both whole sessions and individual papers are welcome. The Center for Renaissance Studies is accepting abstracts for 20-minute papers for its 2015 multidisciplinary graduate student conference (January 22–24, 2015). The conference welcomes proposals from master’s or PhD students from any discipline on any medieval, Renaissance, or early modern topic in Europe, the Americas, or the Mediterranean world.
