Call for Submissions: Carbon Culture Review

Carbon Culture Review Carbon Culture Review welcomes submissions of previously unpublished fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, translations, photography, and visual art connected with modern technology. A journal “at the intersection of new literature, art, technology and contemporary culture,” CCR is distributed in bookstores throughout the United States annually by Media Solutions. Glimmer Train’s New Writer Award (Deadline: 11/30/14)

A notice from Glimmer Train. New Writer Award: First place wins $1,500 and publication in Issue 96. This category is open only to emerging writers whose fiction has not appeared in any print publication with a circulation of more than 5,000. (Seven of the last eight first place New Writer winners have been those authors’ first print publications.) Submit Proposals for Transgressions, ISU Word’s Worth Conference (Deadline: 1/15/15)

The Word’s Worth Committee at Illinois State University seeks paper proposals from graduate students for the ISU Word’s Worth Conference. The 2015 conference theme is transgressions. Call for Manuscripts: Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize (Deadline: 12/1/14)

The Waywiser Press is accepting first- and second-book manuscripts for the tenth annual Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize through December 1, 2014. The winning manuscript will receive £1,750 or $3,000, publication by Waywiser in both the UK and USA, and a reading with the judge at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. On Friday, October 31, story aficionados can celebrate Halloween with 7 Stories: Bird Eat Bird at Martinʼs Corner Bar in Pilsen (2056 West 22nd Place). Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 9 p.m. What to Expect: Emerging writers share their stories in collaborative performances that incorporate live music and visual projection. During intermission, audience members can come onstage to tell brief unscripted stories and compete for free beer. There will also be a costume contest with a cash prize. Chicago Reader Seeks Submissions for Pure Fiction Issue (Deadline: 11/15/14)

In January, the Reader will publish its 15th annual Pure Fiction issue, a collection of short stories submitted by mostly local fiction writers paired with illustrations by mostly local artists. The submission deadline is November 15. Submit stories of up to 3,000 words to fiction@chicagoreader.com. The Reader accepts multiple submissions and pays writers for the stories it publishes. Becoming a Teacher: In Fact Books Seeks Essays from Educators (Deadline: 3/9/15)

Teachers, you all on the front lines of molding young minds—this one’s for you. In Fact Books, a new book imprint supported by the Creative Nonfiction Foundation, is putting together a Becoming a Teacher anthology. It’s accepting submissions from elementary and secondary school teachers through March 9, 2015. Essays must be previously unpublished and no longer than 4,500 words.
