Twice each year Black Lawrence Press will run the Black River Chapbook Competition for an unpublished chapbook of poems or short fiction between 16-36 pages in length. The contest is open to new, emerging, and established writers. The winner will receive book publication, a $500 cash award, and ten copies of the book. Prizes are awarded on publication. Entry deadline for the Spring Competition: May 31, 2018 Visit online for complete submission guidelines. Submissions are accepted via submittable now through May 31.    

CONTEST GUIDELINES  Emerging writers are welcome in ALL categories, but this category is exclusively open to writers whose fiction has not appeared, nor is scheduled to appear, in any print publication with a circulation over 5000. (Entries must not have appeared in any print publication.) Most entries run from 800 – 4000 words, but any lengths up to 12,000 words are welcome. The deadline for submissions to the 2018 John R. Milton Writers’ Conference at the University of South Dakota has been extended to June 1, 2018.  Additional information about speakers and registration is available at: www.usd.edu/miltonconference.   This year’s conference theme is “This Lonely Frontier: Exploring Boundaries of Space, Identity, and Genre,” and confirmed keynote and featured speakers include Percival Everett, Ellen Forney, Karen Salyer McElmurray, and Erika Wurth.

Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts, is currently accepting submissions for the annual Gulf Coast Prize contests!  There are three all-star final judges, including Chen Chen (Poetry), Joshua Ferris (Fiction), and Lacy M. Johnson (Nonfiction). The contest awards publication and $1,500 each to the best poem, essay, and short story, as well as $250 to two honorable mentions in each genre. UNAPOLOGETIC is a magazine made by and for the DePaul community and they want to publish your work! The magazine is focused around how creative outlets help to form identity and is meant to show the expansive amount of creativity within the DePaul community. Work can be published under your name, a pen name, or anonymous; it’s up to you! This anthology seeks to bring together the magic of the Tarot, photography and poetry. They are looking for 78 poets to create original poems in response to a Tarot card they are assigned. If you decide to participate in the project, you will be assigned a Tarot card, and you will craft a poem in response to this card: however you’d like to interpret it, or your relationship with it.
