University of Amherst Graduate Conference, “Putting History to Work”

The Graduate History Department of the University of Massachusetts Amherst is now welcoming proposals for its 2016 interdisciplinary conference, “Putting History to Work.” The conference invites submissions across a range of fields, themes, and historical periods. It will be held from March 5-6 and includes a panel discussion with Jim Grossman the Executive Director of the American Historical Society as well as a networking dinner for conference presenters. Interested students can submit a one-page paper proposal, resume or CV, and a brief two to three sentence biography for consideration to ghapage@history.umass.edu & cscruggs@history.umass.edu. Midwestern Conference on Literature, Language, and Media at Northern Illinois

The 24th annual Midwestern Conference on Literature, Langauage and Media (MCLLM) is currently accepting proposals for 15 minute research presentations. MCLLM encourages proposals from a broad range of topics, particularly ones that explore the conferences 2016 theme: Keep the Change. Proposals of 200-500 words will be accepted until January 29 and may be submitted to mcllm@niu.edu with name, institutional affiliation, email, and phone number. The Big Moose Prize from Black Lawrence Press

The final deadline for Black Lawrence Press’s annual prize for unpublished novels, The Big Moose Prize, is fast apporaching. The prize is open to new and emerging as well as established writers. The contest winner will receive book publication, a $1,000 cash award, and ten copies of the book. The entry period closes on January 31st. Indiana University’s Comparative Literature Graduate Conference, “Crystal Queer”

The Department of Comparative Literature at Indiana University is pleased to announce the Second Annual Comparative Literature Graduate Conference, titled “Crystal Queer.” The conference will be held on Friday, April 1 through Saturday, April 2nd in Bloomington, Indiana. 300 word abstracts are due by January 30th, and can be sent to complit.iu@gamil.com. 2016 Raynes Poetry Prize from Jewish Currents

Magazine Jewish Currents: Activist Politics and Art, is accepting submissions for the 2016 Raynes Poetry Competition. Poets can submit up to three poems related to this years theme “Urge.” The first prize is $1,000, with two runners-up receiving $180. The submission fee is $18 which includes a 1-year subscription to the magazine. Submissions are due January 15th. Further information maybe found on the contest webpage or on the flyer below

Ex Libris would like to announce it will be on a short hiatus for Winter Intercession. Over the next few weeks of December, the site will be working on some small updates and will not be making any new posts. The Blueshift Journal Open for Submissions

The Blueshift Journal is now accepting submissions to their 4th issue. Blueshift is a student-run, international, tri-annual publication, with two online issues and one print issue, available free of charge. Deadline for issue 4 is January 1st. Cooper Street Open for Submissions

Cooper Street, a literary magazine run by MFA students at Rutgers-Camden, is currently looking for fiction, non-fiction and poetry for its fourth issue, slated for January publication. Priority deadline was Friday, November 27th, but submissions are still being accepted. Cooper Street is primarily interested in stories surrounding cities and/or urban issues, particularly those set in the Northeast. But will consider all subjects and genres if the work is interesting and strong. The First Purdue Languages and Cultures Conference

Purdue University has announced a call for submissions to a new symposium focusing on interdisciplinary research in the fields of linguistics and language use. They invite submissions of original research papers from all areas of linguistics, applied linguistics, literature, second language studies, and cultural studies of any language or language group to be presented in 20-minute talks or posters. Call for Submissions – Not That Bad: Dispatches from Rape Culture

Authors Roxanne Gay and Ashley C. Ford, in conjunction with Harper Perennial, are compiling an anthology Not That Bad: Dispatches from Rape Culture. The collection focuses upon the often diminished experiences of victims and survivors of rape culture and sexual violence. They are accepting submissions 2,500 to 7,500 words in length. Black Lawrence Press Open Reading Period

Independent publisher Black Lawrence Press is now open for submissions for their fall reading period. During their November open reading period Black Lawrence accepts submissions in the following categories: novel, novella, short story collection (full-length and chapbook), poetry (full-length and chapbook), biography & cultural studies, translation (from the German and the French), and creative nonfiction. Glimmer Train Short Story Award for New Writers

Independent publisher Glimmer Train is now accepting submissions for their Short Story Award for New Writers contest. The contest is exclusively open to writers whose fiction has not appeared, nor is scheduled to appear, in any print publication with a circulation over 5,000.
