MAE students: Chicago’s Newberry Library Center for Renaissance Studies is calling for submissions to their 2016 Multidisciplinary Graduate Student Conference. They invite abstracts for 20-minute papers from master’s or PhD students from any discipline on any medieval, Renaissance, or early modern topic in Europe, the Americas, or the Mediterranean world. Submissions from disciplines as varied as the literature of any language, history, classics, anthropology, art history, music, comparative literature, theater arts, philosophy, political science, religious studies, transatlantic studies, disability studies, and manuscript studies are encouraged. Punctuate is a new magazine of creative nonfiction, published online, and once annually in print, by Columbia College Chicago. The first issue will be launched online on October 15th. Punctuate accepts submissions year-round in order to release online content on a weekly basis. Writers can send their nonfiction of any length, style, or subject here and follow Punctuate on Facebook.

Black Lawrence Press is now accepting submissions for their Fall 2015 Black River Chapbook Competition. The Black River chapbook Competition is a semi-annual prize for a chapbook of short fiction or poems open to new, emerging, or established writers. Entries should be between 16 and 36 pages in length. The winner will receive $500 and publication. The deadline for the Fall 2015 Competition is October 31, 2015. The submission fee is $15. The Lascaux Review is now accepting poetry submissions for The Lascaux Prize in Poetry. Deadline for submission is September 30, 2015. Poems may be previously published or unpublished, and simultaneous submissions are accepted. Winner receives $1,000 and publication in The Lascaux Review. Winner and all finalists will be published in The 2016 Lascaux Prize Anthology.  Entry fee is $10. Two copies of the anthology will be supplied to every poet appearing in it. Poets may enter more than once, and as many as five poems may be submitted per entry. There are no length restrictions. Restless Books, an independent publisher of international literature based in Brooklyn, is pleased to announce a new $10,000 writing prize for first-generation American authors, the Restless Books Prize for New Immigrant Writing. Restless Books created the prize in order to foster emerging writers of sharp, culture-straddling writing that addresses American identity in a global age and access the often dismissed voices and stories of immigrant peoples. Essay Press, an independent print and digital publisher, is now accepting submissions for its first digital chapbook contest. Submissions are open from August 15 through November 1, 2015. Selections will be made by January. Twelve authors will serve as judges, each selecting one digital chapbook for 2016 publication. Each judge will write an introduction to their selected work. Essay press will then release a new winning chapbook each month in 2016. Narrative is reading submissions for its seventh annual poetry contest. The prizes for the contest winners will be as follows: • First Prize: $1,500 • Second Prize: $750 • Third Prize: $300 • Ten finalists receive $75 each The submission deadline is July 20, 2015. There is a $23 fee for each entry. Poets may submit up to five poems here.

Glimmer Train is accepting submissions for its Fiction Open through June 30, 2015. The writing contest is open to all writers, subjects, and themes. The first-place winner garners $2,500 and publication. The reading fee is $20 per story. Writers may submit their stories here.

The Ashton Group is seeking submissions of 60-minute one-act stage plays for its Finding Words initiative. The writer should be no older than 25. The play can be on any theme or subject. Writers should submit a synopsis (including the plot and character outline) and the first ten pages of the play to the Ashton Group’s associate director, Chris Loveless, at chrisloveless@hotmail.co.uk. There is a prize of £500 for the winning play, which will be produced by the Apprenticed Actors Company. All writers will receive feedback on their work. The submission deadline is Monday, July 6, 2015.

Fifth Wednesday Journal is accepting submissions of short essays of 800 words or fewer on the subject of small literary magazines and the advance toward a digital world for literature. The winning essayist will receive a one-year subscription to Fifth Wednesday Journal and a FWJ T-shirt, and his or her essay will appear in FWJ’s fall issue and blog. Narrative awards the $4,000 Narrative Prize annually for the best short story, novel excerpt, poem, one-act play, graphic story, or work of literary nonfiction that a new or emerging writer publishes in Narrative.
